Saatva Plush vs Luxury Firm vs Firm

Saatva Plush vs Luxury vs Firm

With high-end, luxurious features at a remarkably competitive price, Saatva is quickly becoming one of the most popular mattress brands.

There are three variants in the company’s core lineup: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. It’s up to us, as consumers, to decide which application is the most suitable for our needs, even if they’re all quite good at their intended applications.

The Saatva plush vs luxury firm vs firm comparison is meant to help you decide which Saatva mattress variant to select.

Construction

The three variants share the same basic construction: a 1.25-inch Euro top cover, a 3/8-inch memory foam comfort layer, then 4-inch 14-gauge individually wrapped comfort coils, and finally, a 7-inch deep 13-gauge tempered steel support core.

With the two coil layers having an edge support foam parameter, you don’t sink in when sitting on any side. Saatva variants are covered in 100% organic cotton for a soft, breathable feel.

The manufacturer creates different levels of comfort and support by layering foams with varying degrees of firmness on top of the coil-on-coil structure:

a. Plush

With the plush mattress, softer, more conforming foams are used in the upper layers, creating an enveloping (but not sinking) feel.

b. Luxury Firm

In the ‘flagship’ variant, foam provides both support and conformity to contour your spine without engulfing you.

c. Firm

With the firm model, the mattress’ comfort layer is made up of firmer foams that push back against your body, creating the illusion that the mattress is floating.

Two variants are available: the standard 11.5 inches or the augmented 14.5 inches. As per the manufacturer, both offshoots feel the same, and the differences are purely aesthetic.

Firmness and Feel

Saatva Firmness Scale

Among the three variants, this is the main distinguishing feature:

Plush:

Plush models have an ILD rating of 18, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being fluid-like softness and 10 being tabletop-like hardness), this model is a 3. As a result of its enveloping nature, this model reduces motion transfer the most.

Luxury Firm:

According to the manufacturer, their flagship variant has an ILD value between 5 and 7, similar to the one mentioned above. The individually wrapped coils provide good motion isolation with minimal bounce despite the slight increase in stiffness.

Firm:

Although the firm version has a 30 ILD, it still yields enough contouring to be considered an 8 on a 1-to-10 scale (so it isn’t completely unyielding). However, the stiff nature of this foam allows for some bounce to remain.

Manufacturers make it clear that these variants are unsuitable for people who want extreme sinking plush or unbending hardness.

There is no single best option among the three variants because each one offers significant differences in feel and support. I have nonetheless described each of them separately based on the type of consumer they target.

Plush

A Plush Saatva bed is best suited to people who prefer to sleep on their sides: the soft foam upper layers provide the contouring needed to compensate for the awkward posture of a side sleeper to achieve optimal spinal alignment. Plush mattresses are also suitable for lightweight individuals whose bodies cannot sink into firmer ones.

Luxury Firm

Designed for average sleepers, this variant offers a balanced sleeping surface for side, back, and stomach sleepers.

Firm

This model is designed for back and stomach sleepers who need a resilient surface and lumbar support to avoid sinking inwards excessively.

Different sleeping positions need different comfort levels

Your typical sleeping position is an important factor in determining mattress firmness.

Side sleepers, for instance, have concentrated pressure points in contact with their mattresses on their shoulders, hips, and outsides of their knees and feet. Softer mattresses allow you to sink in and relieve pressure better.

Stomach sleepers may benefit from a firmer mattress, preventing back arching (and pain in the future).

Sleeping on your back is a blessing for many people. Generally, you will be able to sleep well on most types of mattresses as long as they are not too soft or too firm.
