Table
If you are searching for a good waterproof mattress protector, you can have many reasons to do so. For example, you’re prone to accidents because you enjoy drinking coffee (or wine?) in bed.
Perhaps your toddler is still going through the bedwetting phase of potty training.
No matter what reason you have, there are a million products on the market, making it difficult to decide which product makes the most sense.
To help you choose the best waterproof mattress protectors, we researched for you. Here’s what we found.
Pros and cons of waterproof mattress protectors
Pros
- Protects your mattress from stains, sweat, moisture, allergens, dust, and excess humidity
- The mattress will last longer.
- Those prone to allergies will benefit from a dry mattress, as a sweaty mattress is a breeding ground for bacteria, germs, and mites.
- Saving you time and energy cleaning your mattress
- Protects anything left behind by the previous owner of a used mattress
Cons
- If you choose a zippered protector, make sure that it is easy to remove
- Waterproof mattress protectors can be stiff and uncomfortable, especially if they are not properly fitted to your mattress.
How to choose
- Size and care. You should look for mattress protectors that can be machine washed and dried.
- Materials. Vinyl and polyurethane are the most common materials used to make waterproof mattress protectors. You should choose a protector with a vinyl-free coating if you want to stay away from vinyl (and its possible toxic fumes).
- Price. A waterproof mattress protector can cost between $20 and $100. You can choose a protector that fits your budget based on your needs.
How we chose
- Customer reviews. In any case, any product that claims to be waterproof will claim to be fully waterproof. It’s essential to read what reviewers have to say to find out the truth. In addition, we made sure that our picks scored highly on comfort and durability.
- Materials. Mattress protector materials can have a significant impact on your sleep. Vinyl, for example, is not breathable and makes a crinkly noise when you’re in bed. We chose fabrics that are known for being uncomfortable or interfering with sleep.
- Elements beyond being waterproof. You may also need protection from allergens or bedbugs, so we included picks that addressed those concerns.
Pricing guide
The price of mattress protectors is determined by the size of the mattress you are purchasing. Below are prices for full-size mattresses.
- $ = under $20
- $$ = $20–$40
- $$$ = over $40
MattressBuzz picks for the best waterproof mattress protectors.
We reviewed two of the best mattress protectors you can buy: Ghostprotector and Plushbeds organic mattress protectors. Both are excellent products but if you are prone to allergies we advise you to go for the Plushbeds organic mattress protectors and as well the Plushbeds organic mattress we have already reviewed.
GhostProtector
After ordering, Ghostbed Mattress Protectors arrived in branded, durable boxes. Even though I wish companies would ship in plain brown boxes so the contents can’t be seen, I haven’t had too many problems since my house is not near the road. For some people, however, it may be an issue.
It has the advantage that the box is very thick and durable to protect the product inside, as well as an adorable ghost logo. Within the protector was a thick plastic bag, which unzipped and included warranty information and care instructions. The protector unfolded easily and did not emit any off-gassing.
First Impression
Having been unable to find a good waterproof protector in the past, I was impressed that the product didn’t creak when opened or feel heavy or heavy when unfolded. In addition, I appreciate how the company provides information on how to care for the product, warranty, and customer service on the packaging.
Despite their plush nature, the protector does not overwhelm. It was also nice to see that a thick elastic band kept it in place at the bottom. The fabric seemed tight and well stitched at first glance.-
Construction
Although I admit, I had a difficult time finding out what materials were used to make this protector. According to their website, it is made of 30% cotton and patented moisture-wicking material plus cooling fabric technology. Under the quilted surface is a shiny, waterproof barrier. It’s soft to the touch and quilted with a slightly layered surface. The protector is definitely not a traditional protector, but even my own research did not reveal what other materials are blended with the cotton.
Heat Transfer
Protectors tend to retain heat because they are made from materials that aren’t as breathable. A quilted layer of soft cotton combined with a cooling fabric negates heat sinks by providing a breathable, moisture-wicking surface, as well as allowing heat from your body to dissipate. The product was shared with someone who sleeps very hot to see if it would create an uncomfortable surface, and the feedback was very positive. The protector fits well under their sheets and didn’t affect their comfort or temperature regulation in any way.—
Durability
Durable and easy to use, these are made with thick stitching and quality feel. Additionally, they are easy to wash (more on that below) and designed for use. They feel solid and don’t feel thin or weak and the elastic on the edges, which absorbs and stretches, is well stitched.—
Warranty
A 10-year warranty covers your protector. The product will be replaced (minus shipping) at no charge if found to be defective if it is treated as described. For replacement purchases, a prorated plan applies from year 2 to 10.
The product must be registered within 30 days of purchase for the warranty to apply through an authorized retailer. Proof of purchase is also required.
Cost
GhostBed’s products are considered durable, long-lasting luxury items, so their prices reflect this. In comparison with other high-end quality products, their mattress protectors are priced to provide 3 to 4 times the protection of less expensive options.
It is worth keeping an eye on the company’s sales and discounts from time to time.
Final Verdict
In the end, the GhostBed Mattress Protector delivers what it promises. With the directions for use and care, which are fully disclosed, you will have a long-lasting, durable, and protective mattress cover.
The fact that they claim to be waterproof, but must be removed within 30 minutes or you basically risk getting wet would not impress us either. It seems contradictory.
It was comfortable, did not retain heat, and was generally a very high-quality product that we used ourselves.
We tested the absorbency with 18 cups of water. The water sat on top of the quilted cover for a few seconds before absorbing into it. It did not soak through at all and simply dried as it was.
There is enough cotton in the top to absorb and dissipate liquids. There have been no issues with it, and it has found a permanent home on my bed, where children and animals are constantly moving.
The cover is easy to wash and keeps the mattress clean.
Do we recommend this product? Absolutely. If used correctly, it is definitely a quality item worth considering.
Plushbeds Mattress Organic Protector Review
Soft and comfortable, Plushbeds’ jersey top and skirt are made from 100 percent organic cotton. A micro-thin layer of polyurethane is laminated to the underside of the mattress protector, making it waterproof. The polyurethane coating also prevents any chemicals or toxins from leaching through the cover.
Because of this, it is long-lasting and can withstand repeated washings and dryings.
Plushbeds achieve two goals by buying into organic-based beddings, which offer a higher standard of quality and comfort than conventional beddings (as organic cotton is still pristine and has not been harmed by chemicals used to process non-organic cotton), and contributing to environmental preservation by not using toxic chemicals.
In addition to protecting against dust mites and fluids, Plushbeds mattress protectors do not contain dyes. Though the polyurethane used to laminate the underside of a mattress cover is not organic, it is generally regarded as the cleanest waterproof material available today.
Comfort
Sleepers looking for firmness and support will enjoy the Plushbeds mattress protector. Unlike regular memory foam, this mattress protector prevents you from sinking into your bed.
The mattress protector fits mattresses up to 14 inches deep. Since it is waterproof, sweat won’t get trapped in it. It will not generally reduce neck pain, but it can provide decent support for joint and back pain people.
Rest assured you will not experience any inconveniences when moving with the protector because it is lightweight and holds your mattress very well.
If you use the Plushbeds mattress protector, you will soon forget that it is there since it adapts to your mattress very well. The polyurethane layer, while waterproof, does not cut back on breathability.
Instead, it adds to it, making it waterproof and cooling simultaneously. In addition, the Plushbeds mattress protector is crinkle-free and does not make annoying noises when you toss and turn in bed.
Value
Plushbeds currently offers a queen mattress cover for $109, a twin mattress cover for $79, and a king-size mattress cover for $120 (you save $20 each).
You’ll need to spend considerably more (up to $178) if you decide to go for the split king and split cal king sizes. Shipping is still free, though.
The mattresses come with 5-year warranties. The company also offers an exchange and return policy for new, unopened mattresses, except you will not be reimbursed for round-trip shipping fees. It is more expensive than most, but it is well worth it in the long run.
